Biography
Ben Mahmoud was born October 6, 1935, in Charleston, West Virginia. After studying at the Columbus Art School in Ohio in 1957, he received his BFA from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, in 1958 followed by his MFA in 1960. After a long career as an educator starting in 1965 at Northern Illinois University, he became a Distinguished Professor Emeritus upon retirement in 2001.
Mahmoud has shown art works in more than 300 invitational and competitive exhibitions at institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, The Aldrich Museum (Connecticut), and the Detroit Art Institute. His works have been shown in solo exhibitions and are represented in more than twenty-five permanent public collections. Mahmoud has received awards and honors including a Fellowship in Painting from the National Endowment for the Arts and appointment to the Board of Directors of the Illinois Art Council.
