Biography
Elizabeth Maurland was born in Oslo, Norway, on April 6, 1964. After education in Norway, she arrived in the United States in 1984 earning a BA from Luther College in art in 1987. She received her MA degree from Illinois State University in 1989.
From 1989 to 1994, Maurland apprenticed at Genszler Stoneware Designs in Wisconsin, makers of stoneware dinnerware and dishes. In 1994, Maurland opened her own pottery studio in Decorah, Iowa, where she continues to work. She regularly contributes to art fairs, listing upcoming events on her website.
Maurland’s ceramics art has been selected for numerous juried art fairs such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show (2001-2008), the American Craft Council shows (1999-2009), the Cherry Creek Festival of Arts in Denver, CO in 2008 and 1999, and the Sausalito Art Festival in Sausalito, CA, in 2005. She has received awards for her work including Best of Ceramics at the Park City Utah Art Festival in 2007, and other awards of excellence and distinction from other nationally recognized festivals.
Invitational exhibitions in which Maurland has shown her work have been at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, PA in 2009, From the Earth at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, in 2006, the Akar Gallery in Iowa City, IA, also in 2006, and the Charlie Cummings Clay Studio in Ft. Wayne, IN, in 2005. She has shown at other invitational exhibitions throughout the United States. In 2001, Maurland created the top premium for Iowa Public Television’s annual fundraiser.
The two ceramic art works in the Fine Arts Collection by Maurland were purchased using Kemp Endowment funds in 2009. Blackbird Teapot and Anhinga Platter were both created in 2009.
