Marion Nelson

Marion John Nelson was born on May 1st, 1924 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. His parents, Albert and Hilda (Bergerson) Nelson are Scandinavian immigrants. He studied at the University of Minnesota, where he received his bachelor of arts degree in 1947, his master of arts in 1950, and his Ph.D. in 1960. Nelson was the foremost expert on Norwegian-American decorative, folk, and fine art. Professor emeritus of the history of art at the University of Minnesota and former director of Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum for 27 years before his retirement in 1991. He was very influential in the development of the Vesterheim Museum into what it is today. Nelson passed away on September 6th, 2000 after having been recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
