Betty Strand was born July 2, 1923. She lived most of her life in Moorhead, MN, where she taught art for many years at Concordia College with her colleague, Cyrus Running.
Strand said of her work:
"During the summer I would go outside with a watercolor sheet pinned to a surface, pencils and a stool--check out the various flower-beds--begin with something to use as a major motif, then make a line drawing. Then consider some contrasting forms in movement, shape, color to utilize the page--add more linear shapes until I was satisfied with effect. Then I'd go inside and lay in the color in the shapes, laying in the background last, that color ties elements together and controls the overall effect, the mood, dramatic, serene, etc."
