Biography
Rupert Kilgore was born on November 25, 1910, in Swayzee, Indiana. He received his BA in Public School Music from De Pauw University in 1932 and his MA in art from the University of Iowa in 1946. The title of his master’s thesis was “Three Original Paintings.” He was an instructor in Music and Art in the Fairmount, IN schools from 1934-1945. He joined the faculty of Illinois Wesleyan University in 1946 and served as director of the school of art from 1949 until his death in 1971. During his tenure at Illinois Wesleyan, he authored a book in 1961 entitled Aesthetics for the Layman. He experimented in several media during his career including painting, drawing, sculpting, and colored wood/block art.
